MCA STCW Proficiency in Medical First Aid

A 4-day intermediate – advanced onboard STCW Medical First Aid Course running every month on the Wirral near Liverpool. The MCA approved STCW Proficiency in Medical First Aid is designed for seafarers who are designated to provide medical first aid on board ship in accordance with STCW AV1/4 (1-3).

This course is a requirement of the MCA manning tables within various codes / M Notices including, but not limited to: Large Yacht Code, Workboat Code and HS-OSC (High Speed Offshore Service Craft) and aimed for vessels operating in Cat 1 waters (150nm from a safe haven) carrying additional medical supplies onboard.

The course includes:

• Scene management and care of the casualty
• Casualty handling and the unconscious casualty, transportation techniques
• Shock – bleeding, wounds and injuries
• Burns
• Head injuries, fractures and dislocation
• Muscle and Tissue injuries
• Spinal injuries
• Poisoning, effects, treatments and pharmacology
• Serious illnesses
• Heart attacks
